THERE are a large number of dishwasher models available to buy today so here are a few criteria to narrow down the selection of dishwashers to choose from.

• COMPACT, SLIMLINE OR FULLSIZE- if space in your kitchen is limited, then choose a compact or slimline dishwasher model. Compact are small tabletop dishwashers which can only take five or six place settings in one wash. Slimline dishwashers are designed to fit under the counter so have the same height (85cm) as a full size dishwasher, but are narrower (45cm compared with 60cm) so choose a slimline if under the counter space is limited. Slimline dishwashers cater for 8 or 9 place settings in a single wash compared with 12 for a full size dishwasher. • ENERGY EFFICIENCY- with electricity prices rising fast and for environmental reasons, dishwasher models with energy efficiency grade A are strongly recommended. Although they are more expensive, this extra cost is soon recouped via lower electricity bills.

• WASH GRADE- obviously you want to choose a dishwasher that efficiently cleans plates & cutlery so choose wash grade A. Most models are wash grade A.

• DRY GRADE- dishwashers vary in their ability to dry crockery & cutlery but arguably a grade A model is not essential.

• VARIABLE WASH TEMPERATURES- choosing a dishwasher model with a selection of wash temperatures can reduce your electricity bill if you select lower temperature washes.

• OTHER dishwasher functions are really bells & whistles which aren't necessary to get your crockery and cutlery cleaned. Such functions include a high number of different programs and other bells & whistles
