THERE are a bewildering number of washer dryer models available today so here is some advice on what characteristics to look out for before you decide which model to buy.

• FREE STANDING OR BUILT-IN - most washer dryer models are free-standing under the counter models but there are a limited number of built-in or integrated washer dryer models which are designed to fit behind a cabinet door (click here for integrated washer dryers). These built-in washer dryers models generally have a lower height of 82 cm compared with 85cm for free-standing washer dryers and the load capacity is less (maximum of 5 KG for built in models) and these built-in models are substantially more expensive to buy without taking into account the cost of having them fitted in your kitchen.

• ENERGY EFFICIENCY - with the spiralling cost of electricity and for environmental reasons, energy efficent washer dryer models are strongly recommended. Washer dryers are not as energy efficient as washing machines because the drying process uses large amounts of energy. So the most energy efficient washer dryers are grade B as opposed to grade A for washing machines. Although energy efficient washer dryers are a bit more expensive than less efficient models, this cost is soon recouped from lower running costs.

• SPIN SPEED - low spin speed (1000-1100 rmp) washer dryers are the cheapest and do a perfectly adequate job of cleaning clothes without offering bells & whistles. High spin speeds are required for cottons and lower speeds for synthetics and delicates.

• LOAD CAPACITY - washer dryers have a smaller load capacity than washing machines so if this is important, buy a washing machine and perhaps a tumbler dryer

• OTHER functions are really bells & whistles which aren't necessary to get your clothes cleaned. Such functions are variable spin speed, automatic half load, quickwash etc

• FAST DELIVERY - if you are looking for a new washer dryer to be delivered within two or three working days, then your choice of retailers is more restricted.
