THERE are a bewildering number of washing machine models available today so here is some advice on what characteristics to look out for before you decide which model to buy. Then use the links to compare prices for your chosen washing machine model.

• FREE STANDING OR BUILT-IN - most washing machine models are free-standing under the counter models but there are a limited number of built-in or integrated washing machine models which are designed to fit behind a kitchen cabinet door (click here for integrated washing machines). These built-in washing machine models generally have a lower height of 82 cm compared with 85cm for free-standing washing machines and the load capacity is less (maximum of 6 KG for built in models) and these built-in models are substantially more expensive to buy without taking into account the cost of having them fitted in your kitchen.

• TOP LOADER OR FRONT LOADER - most models are front-loading as they are designed to fit under the counter and have a standard height of 85cm and have a standard width of 60cm. Top Loaders are generally narrower and taller but obviously cannot be used under a counter but some come with wheels so you can easily move it out when in use. • ENERGY EFFICIENCY - with the spiralling cost of electricity and for environmental reasons, energy efficent washing machine models are strongly recommended. Although machines with Energy Efficient Grade A are a bit more expensive than less efficient models, this cost is soon recouped from lower running costs.

• SPIN SPEED - low spin speed (1000-1100 rmp) washing machines are the cheapest and do a perfectly adequate job of cleaning clothes without offering bells & whistles. High spin speeds are required for cottons and lower speeds for synthetics and delicates. Most machines automatically select the spin speed according to the program selection but if you use a tumble dryer, it is recommended that you choose a high spin speed machine (>1200 rpm) as it is much more energy efficient to remove as much water as possible with a high spin speed than it is to use a tumble dryer for soaking wet clothes.

• LOAD CAPACITY - for family washes, a machine with a large load capacity (>6.0 KG) cuts down the number of washes required in a week.

• OTHER functions are really bells & whistles which aren't necessary to get your clothes cleaned. Such functions are variable spin speed, automatic half load, quickwash etc

• FAST DELIVERY - if you are looking for a new washing machine to be delivered within two or three working days, then your choice of retailers is more restricted. • BRAND - many people buy a washing machine on the basis of brand, either because their previous machine was of this brand or via recommendation. Bosch & Hotpoint are the most popular washing machine brands.
